The town's name derives from the large number of springs that once gushed out in the area, nowadays only occasionally active. Thanks to its position on the way between the traffic of the central Europe and the Mediterrenean, the village is the headquarter of the Cnetro Padano foreign trade.
The historical importance of Fontevivo is witnessed by a Cistercian Abbey, established by the monastery of Chiaravalle della Colomba in 1142 under the patronage of the Pallavicino family.
Of the abbey complex, only the church has maintained intact its original Romanesque appearance with simple and austere interiors with clustered columns crowned by stone shield capitals.

Weekly market: Wednesday in Fontevivo, Thursday in Pontetaro.
